Central Washington University has been known by four names during its history: it was first called the Washington State Normal School, Ellensburg, WA, between 1891-1937; (like all normal schools, its purpose was to educate secondary school teachers); Central Washington College of Education, 1937-1961; Central Washington State College, 1961-1977; Central Washington University, 1977-present. Barge Hall, built in 1893-1894, was the oldest building on the Washington State Normal School's campus.
