It is located on land that was once a asphalt-plant. Dick Wagner (the founder of the center) developed the land into his museum in the late 1970s.

The Center for Wooden Boats is a public museum that houses historic boats. Tel: 206.382.2628 (2007).

A 24-foot Tlingit Totem pole was raised at the Center in 08/25/2007.
