Housing the UCR Dance, Music, Theatre, Art History, and Studio Art Departments, planning started in 1990, with a State of California appropriation for a 113,400-square-foot Fine Arts Building. Israel, Callas Shortridge won the competition for the building in 1993; Frank Israel and Annie Chu collaborated on its design. The building's construction was delayed between 1994-1997 due to budgetary problems, although the State Legislature finally passed $24 million in funding in 08/1997. Frnak Israel died 06/10/1996, but Barbara Callas filled in as Partner-in-Charge with Annie Chu to finish the construction. MorseDiesel International (later called Amec) of San Francisco, CA, served as the General Contractor. The Fine Arts Building finally opened to the public 05/11/2001.
The UCR Fine Arts Building won the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Institute of Architects' Unbuilt Project Merit Award in 1994. Building cost: $18,235,000 (building only); Construction cost: $20,340,000 (includes site development and utilities); Total project cost: $26,543,000 (includes furnishing, all fees, testing, surveying, etc.); Total assignable space: 55,150 square feet; Gross square footage: 99,910 square feet (includes exhibit and gathering spaces)
