Built c. 1851, this Spanish Colonial farmhouse spread across a large site, serving a self-sufficient Mexican upper class estate, or rancho. It typified the rancho type, with a one-story plan formed around a large patio. The south facade, as well as the interior of the patio, featured arched verandas, providing shade from the intense California sun. Its walls were composed of adobe, insuring excellent insulation from heat in summer and cold in winter. Spanish tile clad the roofs.
