Overview
The original, three-story Patterson Apartment Building stood on the southwest corner of Brooklyn Avenue NE and NE 41st Street in 1909. By 1919, a new owner had renamed the building the "Hawkins Apartments." During the 1920s, another wing was added to the south, greatly enlarging the building, and transforming it from a rectangle into a an L-shape. The building's styling was also likely renovated during the 1920s, to unify both portions.
Building History
This 1920s era apartment house was purchased by the University and used for a number of years as a dormitory. In 2007, it was being used as an office building. Between 09/28/2007-09/30/2007, the 70 employees working here were moved to other locations, in preparation for its demolition in early 2008.
Building Notes
Constructed of a wood frame and faced by brick, the Brooklyn Building stood three stories high and contained 23,000 square feet of space.
Demolition
In 2007, University of Washington planners concluded that the building was "worn out" and not worthy of rehabilitation. It was scheduled for demolition in 2008. In connection with this demolition, the University planned on razing five single family houses it occupied on 12th Avenue NE between NE 40th Street and NE 41st Street.
The UW erected its Elm Hall Dormitory on the site of the Brooklyn Building.
