Architect William A. Cutts (1880-1942) designed the Granada Theatre for the Universal Film Corporation, for whom he had designed approximately 60 other venues. The building owner was M.R. Matthew who paid about $125,000 to erect the Granada. Matthew, like many investors of the 1920s, put his money into a mixed-use theatre/retail building, one that derived income from the booming movie business and other commercial theatres. The Moorish theme can be seen its plaster walls, Spanish baroque window openings, tile roof and minaret-like towers on two front corners.
The Granada Theatre in the Dalles, OR, was made a part of National Historic Register's The Dalles Commercial Historic District in 1986.
A corner marquee looks to have been added in the 1950s.
