Building History

A building that served as a restaurant pre-dated the Carl's Drive-In Barbecue. This building served a handful of restaurants before Carl Karcher (1917-2008) opened his first restaurant here. According to the Anaheim High School Alumni Association, "Before it became Carl’s, the building at 1108 N. Palm was a Tommy’s Drive-In, then it became Scotties, then Lucky’s, all offering drive-in curb service. The building has since been torn down." (See Anaheim High School Alumni Association.com, "Carl’s Drive-In A Popular Hang Out for Anaheim High Students," accessed 01/30/2018.)

In 1945, Architect Harry E. Werner designed this restaurant for Karcher, the founder of the Carl's Jr. fast-food chain in Southern California.
