John Cooper Packard was a leftist lawyer who undertook the defense of writer and political activist, Upton Sinclair, during his free-speech trial of 1923. (Sinclair had been arrested in 05/1923 trying to speak at a fiercely suppressed strike of dock workers at the port San Pedro, CA.)
