Major Cicero Newell and his wife, ?, founded this school of the manual arts in Seattle in 1890 with 18 students. In 1901, the Industrial School's Board of Trustees purchased the ten-acre Charles C. Calkins Estate on Mercer Island, as its new location; first classes were held at what was subsequently called the Boys Parental School in 1904. In 1936, the Boys Parental School, which featured an prominent agricultural portion in its curriculum, became known as the Luther Burbank School, after the well-known California geneticist who had died in 1926. The State of Washington took over administration of the school in 1957 and in 1966 moved its location to Echo Glen, WA. Between 1969-2003, King County and, after 2003, the City of Mercer Island, administered a new park, Luther Burbank Park, on this school site.
