Gill designed this house for the son of Homer Laughlin, the Ohio ceramics tycoon, (founder of the Homer Laughlin China Company) who had commercial interests in Southern California. Homer Laughlin, Sr., erected the Laughlin Office Building in Los Angeles (1897) and built residences for there himself and family members.
