This was the residence of James R. Toberman, (1836-1911) an early Los Angeles City commercial and political leader. A banker and real estate developer, he was a City Council Member (1870) and later Mayor, serving two terms, in 1872-1874 and 1878-1882. He was admired as an honest and efficient public servant.
