This three-story building with the zig-zag exterior walls was erected in 1962 as the Thunderbird Motel. It later became a nursing home, and was purchased by hostelier Andre Balazs in the late 1990s. It opened as the first Standard Hotel in 1999, which by 2011 had grown to include 7 hotels in Miami, FL, New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA. Balazs opened the The Standard Downtown in the old Superior Oil Company Headquarters in 2002.
Tel: 323.650.9090; the name "thunderbird" became a common one for motels across the Pacific Coast. Others existed outside Sacramento, CA, and in Seattle, WA.
