Alteration
A major addition to the third Saint Peter Hospital was made in 1982, when spaces for intensive care, coronary medicine, obstetric services, brief-stay surgery and psychiatric units were added. A stand-alone psychiatric services building opened in 1984 equipped with 26 beds. In 1985, a cardiac catherization laboratory began operations at Saint Peters. The Providence Mother Joseph Care Center, an Alzheimer treatment center began operations nearby to the hospital in 1991, and Providence Saint Francis House opened in 1998, providing ow-cost housing for the elderly. Saint Peter Hospital completed a new birthing center in 1997 that provided homelike, en suite, rooms for women in the labor, delivery, recovery, and post-partum phases of the birthing process. Reflecting an increase in less-costly, out-patient medical procedures, the hospital opened three operating rooms for this purpose and 15 post-survery recuperation beds in 1999.
