Founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1947, Notre Dame High School was a very late essay in the Spanish Colonial Revivial Style. Land was purchased for the high school in 1945; building construction was completed by 08/1947. Classes started the following month. Since 1983, the high school accepted girls for the first time.

A gymnasium was added in 05/1951. To serve a swelling student population, a five-room annex was completed by 08/1953. A bandroom and shop were added by 08/1954. In 09/1956, the Woodman Building was completed, a guest wing was appended to the Brothers' Residence, and the Notre Dame Chapel was lengthened by twelve feet. In 08/1986, more offices were built, the library enlarged, and six new classrooms were built. Named for the prolific Los Angeles developer, the Burns Center for Arts and Technology was finished in 12/2001 and opened the following month. New classrooms in the Riverside Building were completed in 08/2003. The Huston Parking Lot was laid by 07/2004. The Hampton Science Center began operation in 01/2007.
