The first event staged in the Cow Palace was the Western Classic Holstein Show held in April 1941. During World War II, this concrete and steel, six-acre facility housed soldiers shipping out overseas. The Republican National Convention was held at the arena in August 1956. In the 1960s, it housed the San Francisco Warriors of the National Basketball Association (until the completion of the Oakland Coliseum Arena in 1967), as well as rodeos, boxing, ice hockey, roller derby, and other sporting events. Popular rock acts utilized the venue in the 1960s and 1970s.
