Northwest corner of Spring and Jail Street; Jail Street later became Franklin Street. This location would be directly across the street from the Los Angeles City Hall #3.

This structure was built originally by Portguese immigrant, Antous Jose Rocha as his residence; Rocha made his way to the city in 1815. In its earliest days of Anglo settlement, Los Angeles saw intense violence, with murders occurring once a day by 1853. This house, probably one of the most sturdy in the developing town, was remodeled to serve as a jail and city hall.

Remodeled into the first Los Angeles City Hall and Jail in 1850, just after California gained statehood.
