This 347-acre former military facility, Naval Air Station Seattle, was turned over to the City of Seattle in 1989 and named for the influential Senator, Warren G. Magnuson. In 2006, it ranked as the second largest park in the Seattle City system.

In 2006, the Seattle City Council voted to remove 14 acres of paved surface, rehabilitating 10 acres of new wetlands, building two new soccer fields with artificial turf and lighting, one rugby field with turf and lights, one softball field with lights and one without, and adding improvements for pedestrians at the NE 65 Street entrance. Eighty percent of the $18 million cost would be paid for by the Pro Parks Levy passed in 2000.
