Overview

Theophilus and Ila Allen commissioned architectural designer Gustav Laumeister to design this remarkable Craftsman bungalow at 601 Melville Avenue in the Professorville neighborhood of Palo Alto, CA. According to Palo Alto Stanford Heritage (PAST), who included the Allen House on its 1994 home tour: "Soon after its completion, it was "considered by many to be the most attractive home in Palo Alto." The house interior contains built-in furniture, unusually copious storage space, redwood paneling and beams, as well as a cantilevered stairway in the entry hall. A separate apartment on the ground floor, entered at 1261 Webster, was originally occupied by Mrs. Allen's parents." (See Palo Alto Stanford Heritage, "1994 Holiday House Tour: Professorville," accessed 06/29/2016.)
