S. Charles Lee (1899-1990), the noted Los Angeles movie palace architect, designed the Mayfair Theatre in the late 1930s. The Mayfair ran first-run movies during the 1940s-1960s. By 1974, the Pussycat Theatre chain owned the building, showing X-rated fare. By about 1990, the Pussycat divested itself of the Mayfair and sold the building to owners who attempted to show revival films there. This failed by 1991. Walnut Properties of Los Angeles owned the theatre in 1991. It had a serious fire in 2000, and was removed four years later. Its marquee lay fallow for about 10 years before the U.S. Seabee Museum at Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) Port Hueneme retrieved it for reuse.
The Mayfair Theater had one screen, and housed 850 people before it closed.
Demolished; the Mayfair was razed in 08/2004, and replaced with a condominium complex.
