Overview
The Frederick R. Weisman Foundation, founded by the entrepreneur and philanthropist Frederick R. Weisman (d. 1994) in 1982, funds several art museums in the US, including Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University in Malibu, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the San Diego Museum of Art, and the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota. Born in MN, Weisman moved to Southern CA at age seven, where he made his fortune starting work in his father-in-law's Val-Vita Cannery (later part of Hunt Foods) and owning several lucrative Toyota dealerships in the region. He purchased a 1920s residence designed by Gordon B. Kaufmann in 1982 as a residence and a backdrop for his contemporary art collection. With his ties in CA, he tapped the Santa Monica-based Frank O. Gehry to design this museum overlooking the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, MN.
