Due to dwindling participation, the 1st and 2nd Churches of Christ, Scientist, combined in 2006, relocating to the second congregation's larger, newer facility on Cowper Street in the South Palo Alto Neighborhood. Embarcadero Capital Partners, LLC, of Belmont, CA, purchased the now surplus church in 2009 with the purpose of reusing it as expensive office space. It was scheduled to open in 2010. The architect, Elmer Grey, designed three Christian Science facilities in CA, in Long Beach, Los Angeles and Palo Alto between 1912-1916. Local contractors, Frank Graves and Son, erected the church as per Grey's design. In 1978, the church was placed on the register of Historic Buildings by the City of Palo Alto with a Class II designation; according to the city's standards, a Class II building is: "A 'Major Building' of regional importance. These buildings are meritorious works of the best architects, outstanding examples of a specific architectural style, or illustrate stylistic development of architecture in the State or region. A major building may have some exterior modifications, but the original character is retained." (See
The church also had a Christian Science Reading Room at this location, Forest Avenue and Bryant Street. Tel: (650) 326-6371 (2006).
