Building History
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF) began operations at the La Grande Station on 07/29/1893. The lavish station cost approximately $50,000 to build, and featured Moorish architectural features intermixed with details derived from the prevailing Richardsonian Romanesque Style.
ATSF rail service switched to the new Union Station in 1939. The last ATSF train stopped at the depot on 05/03/1939.
Building Notes
A Harvey House restaurant operated at the depot from about 1893 until about 1923.
Alteration
A remodeling effort occurred in 1914.
The 1933 Long Beach Earthquake inflicted significant damage to the La Grande Depot, and was closed soon thereafter. For safety reasons, its dome had to be removed following the quake. It remained standing for some years, and was used in the relocation of Japanese-Americans during their internment during World War II.
Demolition
The La Grande Station was demolished c. 1946.
