Anshen and Allen designed 8 mariner freighters for American President Lines (APL), Limited. This firm emerged from the bankruptcy of the Dollar Shipping Company in 1938. APL was one of the earliest to explore containerization for the overseas transport of goods in 1961, with the introduction of the container ships, President Tyler and President Lincoln. The company discontinued U.S. to Asia passenger service in 1973.
