In 2007, this facility contained over 260,000 volumes and 600 periodicals. Architects G.Z. Brown and Mark DeKay wrote of the basic organization of the Mount Angel Abbey Library: "The Mount Angel Library in Oregon, by Alvar Aalto, divides activities into two main groups: reading, which requires high levels of illumination, and book storage, which requires low levels. The reading areas are next to openings in the skin along the perimeter wall and under the skylight in the center, while the book storage occurs between the two reading areas, farthest from the pools of light."
