Matthew Sherman owned a large tract of land in what is now Downtown San Diego, and after the completion of transcontinental railroad line in 1885, he grew richer through the sale of his land. As a result, he built a larger house for himself and his family, spending $15,000 for an eleven-room dwelling.
This house still stands, but was remodeled as the Sherman Apartments.
