Northwest corner of 19th Street and J Street.

This was the first residence erected in San Diego by the early Anglo settler, Captain Matthew Sherman, who came to the city in 1865. Sherman acted as the city's Customs Collector between 1865-1869, and purchased 160 acres of land to establish a farm and later a subdivision (in 1869), Sherman Heights. This early tract in New San Diego contained an area between 15th Street and 24th Street and Market Street and Commercial Street.
