The Mount Lowe Railroad, opened by the inventor and balloonist, Thaddeus Sobieski Constantine Lowe, commenced operation 04/07/1893. When Lowe ran out of money to finish the line to the summit, the Pasadena & Los Angeles Electric Railway purchased it. This company, itself, was bought by the local transportation monopoly, the Pacific Electric, in 1902.
