Rhoda May Knight Rindge (1864-1941), widow of Frederick Hastings Rindge (1857-1905), was the last of the great landowners of a Mexican rancho in California. She and her husband purchased the entire 13,316 acres of Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit from the Estate of Matthew Keller in 1892. After protracted legal battles with the railroads and the State of California over right-of-way access to the ranch, the Rindge fortune, by the late 1920s, was severely drained. The Depression's effects on real estate development also negatively affected family finances. May Rindge died 02/08/1941, nearly bankrupt, her 50-room mansion, started in 1928, unfinished.
