Building History

Facing a large number of World War II veterans returning to school on the GI Bill, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was forced to build new housing for graduate students and faculty. MIT Professors W.H. Brown, Robert Woods Kennedy, Ralph Rapson, Carl Koch, and William Davies collaborated on the project.

The Eastgate Apartments were retired as housing at MIT at the end of 08/2020. An MIT spokesman indicated that Eastgate had "reached the end of its useful life." At the end of its lifespan, the building housed graduate students with families. (See Áron Ricardo Perez-Lopez, The Tech.com, "Eastgate Apartments to close at the end of summer," published 02/20/2020, accessed 09/24/2025.)
