Building History
Rosenthal designed this theatre for Hollywood Theaters, Inc. C.E. Barnett excavated the foundations of this building; on 07/04/1920, the Los Angeles Times reported that A.P. [sic] Rosenthal was "...preparing for a theater and office building on Hollywood Boulevard, near the junction of Ivar Street for Gore Brothers, Sol Lesser and associates. The front portion of the building will be four stories in height, containing thirty office rooms, and the theater lobby on the ground floor will be flanked by store-rooms on each side. The auditorium of the theater will have a seating capacity of about 2700, and plans call for a large stage, scene lofts, and dressing rooms for the production of legitimate plays. The structure will be of concrete, with terra cotta facing, and the interior is to be finished in tile, marble and hardwood." (p. 2, part V).
A note in the Southwest Builder and Contractor in 08/1920 said: "Excavating--Architect A.B. Rosenthal...reports that the contract for the excavating for the new theater building to be erected at Hollywood for Hollywood Theaters, Inc., has been awarded to C.E. Barnett. The plans for the building will be completed and ready for bids in about a week." (See "Theaters," Southwest Builder and Contractor, 08/20/1920, p. 12 and p. 31.)
Despite these two articles discussing its imminent construction, it does not appear that this Hollywood Theatre was completed.
