In 1909, this building at 1530 Fifth Avenue was one of two rooming houses operated by Zacharias and Irene Woodson (the other at 1820 24th Avenue), early African-American settlers in Seattle. The couple had moved to the city by 1897; in 1899, Zacharias worked as a bootblack. The Woodson rooming houses catered to visitors of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition.
