Overview

This first gymnasium on the UW Campus was built in the vicinity of where Hansee Hall was later erected. The first athletic stadium was also built on the campus's NE 45th Street periphery, northeast from Denny Hall, the campus administrative and teaching center in the 1890s and early 1900s. It was designed by the architect, Charles W. Saunders (1857-1935), who also created the Administration Building, Denny Hall.

Building History

This facility was erected at a cost of $7,000 to house military drills. University Healthcare occupied it by 1908 as the first medical facility on campus. The athletic facilities in Hutchinson Hall and Hec Edmondson Pavilion replaced this first gymnasium.

Building Notes

This building had the UW Physical Plant identification number "Building 002."

Demolition

University officials razed this gymasium in the 1928, shortly after the construction of Hutchinson Hall and Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
