This two-story building orignally served as a Kress five and dime store. The University of California, Riverside, obtained the building from the City of Riverside, under an agreement that it would be redeveloped. San Francisco architect, Stanley Saitowitz, was named Architect for the California Museum of Photography remodeling in 08/1986.

This Kress Store contained 22,000 square feet of space. In 1986, UCR officials wanted the museum to contain a 300-seat auditorium, library, museum shop, seminar room, and a scholar's work area.
