Building History

King County voters agreed to a $193 million bond issue that provided funds for seismic enhancements to the whole Harborview campus and for the erection of the Maleng Building, which would contain 8 additional operating rooms, 50 more inpatient beds and clinical services. The Maleng Building was to be connected by a sixth-floor bridge connecting it to the East Building across the street.

As noted by the University of Washington (UW) News.edu: “In September 2000, King County voters passed a $193 million bond measure that included funding for the Maleng Building, an expanded Emergency Department and earthquake stabilization at Harborview. The Maleng Building is built to the highest seismic standards. It provides Harborview with eight more operating rooms, 50 additional inpatient beds and space for acute care, rehabilitation and clinic services. A sixstory bridge building connects to the main hospital across the street. It includes waiting areas for patients and visitors with sweeping views of Mount Rainier. On Tuesday, June 17, Harborview Medical Center, King County and UW Medicine celebrated the opening of the Norm Maleng Building, a major new facility on the Harborview campus. The building is named in honor of the late Norm Maleng, King County prosecutor for almost 30 years and a leading advocate for the medical center. More than 350 people attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the occasion.” (See www.washington.edu, “Harborview celebrates opening of Maleng Building,” published 06/26/2008, accessed 04/02/2025.)

Building Notes

The magazine, Construction Communications, announced in 05/2008 that the Maleng Building was nominated for in its annual "Building of America Awards" program.

Alteration

In 2025, two floors of the Norm Maleng Building were renovated by Andersen Construction. A website for King County, harborviewbondprogram.com, said of the renovation in 02/2025: "King County and Harborview Medical Center hosted a ribbon cutting and open house for two renovated floors of the Norm Maleng Building in January. The renovation features 40 patient rooms, evenly split with20 rooms on each floor. Floor 4 is dedicated to non-critical care, while floor 7 handles critical care patients. Andersen Construction guided the construction of the project. The strong partnership between King County and Harborview led to the implementation of an expansive mentorship program and equity and social justice innovation plan that exceeded the small business goals, including the engagement of firms registered with the state Office of Minority and Women-Owned Businesses. The Maleng project also included renovating two floors in the Ninth and Jefferson Building. Floors 9 and 10 in NJB feature more than 60 exam rooms, including specialty spaces like the rehab gym. This project is one of King County’s earliest completed Progressive Design-Build projects, completed on time and within budget, and exceeding small business (including MWBE) goals.” (See King County.gov., "KING COUNTY CO-HOSTS RIBBON-CUTTING FOR NEWLY RENOVATED FLOORS IN NORM MALENG BUILDING," published 02/02/2025, accessed 04/02/2025.)
