Overview
Fresno architect Edward T. Foulkes (1874-1967) designed this residence for Louis Einstein (1847-1914), a pioneering German/Jewish-American businessman in Fresno, CA. Einstein was President of the Fresno Gas and Electric Light Company (c. 1898), 1st National Bank of Coalinga, Einstein Investment Company (c. 1913) and Bank of Central California (1887-1914). He also owned Fresno commercial real estate. A building of his burned in a large downtown fire of 08/06/1893. This was rebuilt at 942 I Street. Einstein lived in this house from 1912 until his death on 11/09/1914.
Building History
Einstein's widow, Eda Newhouse Einstein (1862-1948), remained living in the house until her death. The Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) purchased the Einstein Residence in 1950 and has utilized it as an activities center since then.
