A two-story, Italianate house with a central cupola, built by a man named Strentzel in 1883, the naturalist John Muir occupied the dwelling from 1890-1914; his estate included the 325-acre Mount Wanda area, and this vantage point allowed Muir to have spectacular views of the Carquinez Straits; Muir's gravesite was added to the estate's acreage in 2000;
The front of the house features two bay windows, a projecting front porch and Italianate detailing; the house possessed 14 rooms when Muir lived here and its three floors occupied 10,010 square feet;
