In 1842, Jose Serrano received a large grant of land from the Mexican administrator of California, Governor Alvarado, that the former called "Canada de los Alisos El Toro," or "El Toro," for short; he and his relatives built a number of adobe buildings on the land soon after 1842, but only the Serrano Adobe House remains;
