Edward Carlton Gilbert, of the firm Gilbert and Sons, Architects, served as the architect for this grand residence built at the sizable cost of $16,000 in 1885. Amos Gable (born c. 1835 in OH-d. 02/26/1898 in Woodland, CA), his wife, Mary (born c. 1856 in CA), and their children, Harvey (born c. 1877 in CA) and Sadie (born c. 04/1880 in CA) lived in this house.

The Gable Brothers, Amos and Harvey were early ranchers in Yolo County, CA; their late Italianate mansion was a rare survivor of the type, grand Victorians built by prosperous, first-generation transplants to California.
