The sanitarium was named for the New York physician, Dr. Walter Jarvis Barlow, (1868-1937), who came to Southern California in 1895 to recover from tuberculosis; he founded this facility in 1902 and another prominent local sanitarium, Las Encinas in Pasadena, CA, in 1904;
A library for tuberculosis patients was added in 1921;
