Building History

San Francisco architectural firm Farquharson and Kenitzer, Architects, designed this ornate Second Empire Style building.

This was the first building erected on the new Berkeley site of the University of California, formerly located in Oakland, CA. In 2011, South Hall remained the last vestige of the original University of California, Berkeley, Campus.

Alteration

Professor Kenneth Cardwell, a University of California, Berkeley (UCB), Professor of Architecture, supervised the renovation of South Hall between 1960 and the late 1960s. According to a UC Berkeley web site describing the history of South Hall: "In 1968, in celebration of the University's centennial and under the direction of Prof. Kenneth Cardwell, the building was renovated. At that time, the stair between the second and third floors was blocked and stairways in enclosed shafts at either end of the hall were added." (See University of California, Berkeley.edu, “About South Hall,” published 08/09/2017, accessed 08/11/2020.) A note in Cardwell's obituary published in 2011 stated: "He directed work on the preservation of the historic South Hall of the University of California between 1960 and 1966." (See Stephen Tobriner, University of California, Berkeley, Faculty Senate.edu, "In Memorian Kenneth H. Cardwell, Professor of Architecture, Emeritus UC Berkeley 1920 - 2010," published 2011, accessed 08/11/2020.)

The UC Berkeley Administration made alterations to the building compliant with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, including adding an elevator and a wheelchair ramp.
