George Ellery Hale (1868-1938), a Chicagoan like Myron Hunt (1868-1952), began his work reshaping the Throop Polytechnic University in Pasadena, CA, following his move from the University of Chicago in 1905. The Carnegie Institution, formed by the Scottish-American steel baron Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) in 1902, financed construction of the Mount Wilson Observatory in 1904-1905.
