This institution began in 1893 as "Throop University" in a building designed by Harry Ridgeway. A second building campaign occurred in 1907-1908 when the school was known as "Throop Polytechnic Institute;" the school was known as this between 1893-1912. It was subsequently known as "Throop College of Technology" between 1913-1919. It changed its name to the current "California Institute of Technology" in 1921. At the request of President George Ellery Hale, a new campus plan was created by Bertram G. Goodhue in 1917.
