Built for a physician and his wife (also an M.D.), the Gates House is another idiosynchratic small house design by Bernard Maybeck; Maybeck played with scale and great deal, here enlarging a central arched porch (with its enlarged classical members) so that it became the only opening on one street-facing facade; Gates lived here a relatively short time, moving from the house permanently in 1909;
