Welton Becket, an architect based in Los Angeles, CA, designed the open-air Hillsdale Shopping Center for the San Mateo developer, Dave D. Bohannon, in 1952-1954. (Bohannon built many post-war residential tracts in San Mateo County, CA.) Bohannon finished construction on Becket's design in 12/1954. At this time, a Sears Department Store and a May's Department Store (the first in the Bay Area outside of San Francisco) both operated at the center from the beginning. An Emporium-Capwell Department Store opened in 1962. In 2010, Hillsdale had approximately 130 stores anchored by the large department stores, Nordstrom, Macy’s and Sears. The Bohannon Development Company continued to operate Hillsdale in 2010, a rarity for a family to retain ownership of a shopping center at this time.
Worked on Hillsdale has been periodic since since its opening.
