Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian opened on 09/15/1952, and was filled to capacity by Spring 1953. Between 1953-1956, it operated at more than 100% capacity, prompting calls for expansion.

An 80-bed addition was planned in 08/1956, but was still $13,000 short of its fund-raising goals. Hospital administrators hoped to begin construction in 11/1956.
