The dam was built in winter 1917; it extended 720 feet long and stood 25 feet high;

Soil liquefaction caused the dam to give way during the Santa Barbara Earthquake of 1925; 30 million gallons of water traveled down Voluntario Street and Alisos Street, flooding the downtown.
