This huge agricultural estate occupied land that now covers the current cities of Chino, CA, and Chino Hills, CA. In 1841, Antonio Maria Lugo (1775–1860) obtained title to a 22,193-acre property from the Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado (1809-1882), head of the Mexican Government, following its appropriation the previous decade of mission lands once maintained by the Catholic Church. Lugo and his son-in-law, Isaac Williams (1799-1856) operated the enormous estate, and, in 1843, Williams petitioned Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena (d. 1853) to grant him approximately 13,000 more acres. Here, Lugo and Williams raised cattle for beef and tallow, making large profits following the influx of Anglo settlers after 1849.
