Firehouse #23 was designated a City of Seattle Historic Landmark, as were many other fire department facilities.

The building was remodeled for use as a community center in 1970 by Seattle architect Ted Bower (b. 1922). Seattle landscape architect Richard Haag (b. 1923) designed the neighboring Firehouse Park two years earlier.
