Building History

Due to budgetary constraints, the University of Washington finished Clara McCarty Hall in two stages, the first in 1960, the second in 1962; McCarty Hall, named for the UW's first female graduate in 1876, originally housed women only, at its peak 600 in number.

Building Notes

An advertisement appeared in the magazine Architecture / Westin 09/1963 for Builders Brick Company of Seattle. The ad showed three different photos of McCarty Hall and had the caption: "The 'University of a Thousand Years' and Builders Brick Company''s University Brick to blend this modern building with the dignity of this old campus. University brick, with its rough texture and variegated color creates a tapestry appearance of lasting beauty. Years from now this brick building will look as attractive as the day it was built." (See "Brick--The Timeless Material," Architecture / West, vol. 9, no. 9, 09/1963, p. 9.)
