The Mexican Army built this long adobe walled structure to house its troops in Alta California in the early nineteenth century; the United States Army occupied it after 1846, and set up its military command post here; California's first newspaper was published in this utilitarian building;

Parts of El Cuartel were recycled to serve as a Monterey Public Library and school;

The building was demolished in 1910;
